During my years as a police commander and chief my biggest challenge (in Illinois) was getting my officers to make traffic stops. Traffic offending was the biggest overall public complaint we received. Today the “uninformed” press wants to challenge an officers ability to do the single thing that normal citizens want the police to do, make the streets safe. Of course, traffic enforcement is a great way to discover weapons, drugs, suspended drivers, drunk drivers, and wanted persons but some, with a vested interest in doing so, just want to push the narrative that traffic enforcement is “racist.” How about we stop listening to this nonsense and find ways to reward officers that take this responsibility seriously.

Excellent points! Chicago PD has been very restrictive on policing with it’s policies. It was refreshing to hear Superintendent Snell argue that per-text stops are legal and a great tool for police. Your point about having to encourage officers to make traffic stops is interesting. I think it further proves that police are not overzealous with conducting traffic stops. Which is contrary to the narrative that major new media likes to push.
