REIMAGINING PUBLIC SAFETY IN THE CITY OF ST. LOUIS A VISION FOR CHANGE

The investigation uncovered the following key problems in the current state of public safety in St. Louis:

• Racial disparities in the harms inflicted by policing;

• Gaps and inconsistencies in SLMPD policies (especially related to use of force, pedestrian and vehicle stops, and interactions with people experiencing mental health emergencies);

• A need for non-police alternative responders for certain call types;

• Inefficiencies in the allocation of SLMPD patrol staff and resources, which create inequities in service levels;

• A need for accessible, affordable out-of-school time programming for St. Louis youth;

• Insufficient community engagement on the part of the City and SLMPD; and.

• A lack of robust accountability systems for SLMPD.

The Functions of the Police in Modern Society – Egon Bittner

This is a classic book for policing. Chapter VI is one of my favorites – The Capacity To Use Force As The Core Of The Police Role. Chapter VI discusses the “non-negotiably coercible” police use of force. How police sometimes shouldn’t have to negotiate when they are going to use force. The discussion of any police use of force creates an interesting discussion especially now under the current climate.

Phoenix Police chief says manhunt intensifying for suspect who shot officer – YouTube

This news interview is a perfect example of how the local news media supports law enforcement. Chief Williams did an excellent job conveying the police department’s message and the risk to the community. Chief Williams also showed the awesome community support that the PD was receiving.

The news reporter showed his concern for the officers and the community and the need to support to PD.

This is vastly different that what is shown in the national news (excluding Fox News and Newsmax TV). It is refreshing to see and it should remind us all of the local support that police receive.

God Bless the Phoenix officers that are injured and their families so they can get through these difficult times. God bless the Phoenix PD because everyone in the department is suffering from these attacks. Thanks to the Phoenix community for their support.

Reforming the police through procedural justice training: A multicity randomized trial at crime hot spots | PNAS

Our study is a randomized trial in policing confirming that intensive training in procedural justice (PJ) can lead to more procedurally just behavior and less disrespectful treatment of people at high-crime places. The fact that the PJ intervention reduced arrests by police officers, positively influenced residents’ perceptions of police harassment and violence, and also reduced crime provides important guidance for police reform in a period of strong criticism of policing. This randomized trial points to the potential for PJ training not simply to encourage fair and respectful policing but also to improve evaluations of the police and crime prevention effectiveness

Detroit Police Department- Community Safety Strategy 2022

This is an interesting approach where DPD has a overall department wide 5-point plan that each precinct discusses how it will apply the plan in its precinct. This way the community can see how crime-fighting will take form in their neighborhood.
